The trials and tribulations of ageing can be quite different in many ways for many people.
Some people incubate and accept their age, especially after a prosperous and fulfilling manners.
Others whitethorn feel unsatisfied, under achieved, and unfulfilled. This may result in a sense of false
security for many; an ultimate outlet of serenity. God is Not a Fish Inspector, wirrten by W.D
Valgardson, depicts the life of Fusi; an elderly man residing in Eddyville, Manitoba. He is a
fisher who continues to fish, despite losing his commercial search license due to a age
related contingency clause. He lives with his estranged female child and also the antagonist, Emma,
and his slavish son-in-law, John. Fusis fear of retirement is the privation of his dignity,
independence, and sense of self-worth. His personal issues create conflicting variables which
negatively restore his quality of life.
Fusis refusal to retire causes his daughter, Emma, to hold her father in contempt. Emma
has been living with her father her entire life. Emma, identified as the antagonist,
objects and criticizes him roughly daily. She seems to possess a desire to be righteous
and to prevail and control her environment as she sees fit.
The purpose of her husband, Johns
submissive character in the story, is to further enforce her position as a dictator. Her major
conflict is with her father. She wants Fusi to quit fishing and to move into the retirement facility,
perhaps to secure the family home for herself and her husband. Emma employs psychological
warfare
against Fusi, manipulating him into considering the retirement home. Evidence of this can be
lay down in the last page of the story in a skirmish between Fusi and Emma. What do you want?
