Mother to Son by Langston Hughes is outstanding monologue stating the relationship between obtain and son, the mother strives to reprove her son about the challenges of racial contrasts. Critics state that the mother in Mother to Son by Langston Hughes is teaching her son of life storys negative obstacles; however she is also teaching he should strive to be optimistic through the challenges of racial discrimination regardless of how difficult life may become.
Langston Hughes was born on February 1 1902, a time when racial discrimination was magnanimous in the United States (Poetry for Students 178).

His father left him and his mother to brook for themselves when he left home to become a lawyer, because of this, Hughes and his mother faced many financial problems (Poetry for Students 178). Many times she was forced to leave home often to find work, leaving Hughes with his grandparents (Poetry for Students 178). In 1926 he joined a group of African American artists and writers known as the Harlem Rena Issance (Poetry for Students 178).
