1.Jane Addams established Hull House, the most conspicuous American settlement house, in Chicago in 1889. Addams condemned struggle as well as poverty.
2.Florence Kelly was a lifelong hero for the welfare of women, children, blacks, and consumers. She served as a general secretary of the internal Consumers League. She led the women of Hull House into a successful vestibule in 1893 for an Illinois anti-sweatshop law that protected women workers and prohibited child labor. She was withal a leader in womens activism and social reform.
3.Charles Darwin was an English Naturalists who wrote the origin of the Species in 1859. His theory stated that in nature the strongest of a species survive, the weaker animals died out leaving only the stronger of the species. Through this process of instinctive selection the entire species improved.
4.Booker T. working capital was an ex-slave who saved his gold to buy himself an education. He believed that blacks must first gain economic equality before they gain social equality. He was electric chair of the Tuskegee Institute and he was a part of the Atlanta Compromise. Washington believed that blacks should be taught useful skills so that whites would see them as useful.
5.W.E.B DuBois was a Harvard intellectual.
His criticism was that Washingtons method put blacks in a elfin box of manual labor. DuBois helped start the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of sloping People) and called for the talented tenth of the black community to be given(p) full access and equality.
6.Henry George was a journalist-author and an original thinker. He saw poverty at its worst in India and wrote the guiltless Progress and Poverty. This book in 1879 broke into the best-seller lists. He believed that the insistency of a growing population with a fixed yield of land pushed up property values.
